Today we are glad to share that iBis Learning has been recognized as a Candidate for Accreditation with MSA. For a close-knit dual language school in our founding year, this is a meaningful step. It signals that we meet clear readiness criteria and that we are committed to continuous improvement, and it moves us toward eligibility for a funding program that could make iBis more affordable for many Houston families.

What MSA Accreditation Candidacy Means

Accreditation can sound technical, but the idea behind it is straightforward. MSA accreditation is a professional peer review carried out by experienced educators for the purpose of growth and improvement. The process is structured yet flexible. It helps a school clarify its vision, honestly assess current practices, and turn that reflection into a concrete plan.

It is not a one-size-fits-all checklist, and it does not force a school into someone else's mold. In fact, the self-study tends to sharpen a school's identity rather than dilute it. For iBis, that means our dual language model, our focus on executive functions, and our mixed-age, inquiry-based approach are not set aside during this process. They are examined, strengthened, and documented.

MSA has been supporting schools since 1887 and today accredits more than 3,000 schools, systems, and learning services providers across 117 countries. Being named a Candidate for Accreditation is recognition that iBis meets MSA's readiness criteria and is prepared to begin the full process.

Why We Are Pursuing Accreditation Now

We chose to move forward with accreditation for reasons that are specific to our community:

  • A trusted signal for founding families. Choosing a school in its first year takes trust. Candidacy shows families that iBis is being reviewed against a respected national standard and is serious about doing this well.
  • Stronger systems as we grow. MSA organizes its review around five standards: Foundations, Governance and Organization, Student Well-Being, Resources, and Teaching and Learning. Working through these prompts deep reflection across the whole school and produces more reliable systems for students and families.
  • Progress you can see. The self-study produces usable tools, such as clear policies and parent-friendly summaries, that guide day-to-day decisions rather than sitting in a binder.
  • Eligibility for Texas ESA funding. This is the reason many of our families care about most, and it deserves its own explanation below.

What Candidacy Means for ESA-Eligible Families

The Texas Education Freedom Account (TEFA) program, often called an ESA, allows eligible Texas families to use state funds toward private school tuition. Accreditation is one of the requirements a school must meet to become an approved TEFA provider, which is why this milestone matters well beyond paperwork.

Here is what families should understand at this stage:

  • Accredited private schools qualify for a higher funding tier. The program provides significantly more funding for students enrolled in an accredited private school than for homeschool families. Because iBis is a licensed private school with certified teachers, and not a homeschool, enrolled students would qualify for that higher tier once approval is in place.
  • Accreditation is one piece of the requirements. Becoming an approved provider also involves a two-year operating history and annual assessments for grades 3 through 12. Candidacy moves us forward on the accreditation piece.
  • iBis is pursuing approval, not yet approved. We are actively working toward meeting all of the requirements, and we expect to have more to share with families in the coming year.

Where We Are in the Journey

Think of accreditation as a guided growth journey alongside educators who have been in our shoes. The MSA team serves as experienced guides rather than gatekeepers, and the process doubles as a framework for building the tools a school needs to serve students better.

Here is where iBis stands:

  • Candidacy visit complete. We have hosted our initial visit, which qualified iBis as a Candidate for Accreditation.
  • Self-study underway. Over the following months, we are aligning the policies and practices we have already developed with MSA's standards.
  • Peer review visit ahead. When the self-study is complete, a small team of educational peers will visit iBis as critical friends, celebrating strengths and noting areas for continued growth. At the end of the visit, they determine whether to recommend iBis for accreditation to the MSA Commission.

We are targeting full accreditation later this year. As with any school, the accreditation visit depends on having students enrolled so the review team can see our program in action, which is one more reason our founding families play such an important role in this chapter.
